Expand Comfort Zone
In order to grow, we must progress. Many argue, that to achieve growth it is best to step out of your comfort zone. To perform tasks which you are not comfortable with in order to achieve success. But what if you, above all, cherish comfort? How can you step out of that zone? Are you like me and have comfort atop of your core beliefs? Stepping out of the comfort zone is like jumping off a cliff – suicidal!
What about looking at it from a different perspective? How about including the tasks and experiences that are not comfortable, in our comfort zone – expand comfort zone!
Identify Your Limiting Beliefs
First step – identify the beliefs and things that you consider to be out of the comfort zone.
Examples – limiting beliefs:
I am too short to dunk the ball
I am too old to jump in the puddle
I don’t have the experience to apply for the job
My boss will never agree to a pay rise
That house will never be mine
Next, list the limiting beliefs that you have. Knowing what they are makes easier to approach and change them. You will find that you are not even consciously aware of many.
Finally, start changing your beliefs. Expand comfort zone to achieve success.
Don’t Get Out of Comfort Zone
To change your limiting beliefs you do not need to get out of your comfort zone, you just need to expand it. Do it in small steps if you have to. How? Let’s say I want to lose weight but I am comfortable with my eating habits. Limiting belief – I cannot lose weight if I don’t change my eating habits. If you were to step out of your comfort zone, you would change your diet, leading to weight loss. But already we established you are comfortable with what you eat. How about expanding your comfort zone. One way, would be to introduce new things to your diet – let’s say drinking a glass of water as soon as you get up. Later on, maybe adding extra fibre to your diet. Do you see where this is going? No drastic changes which are uncomfortable. Just expansion of the comfort zone. Or a totally different approach, adding exercise. You did not change your eating habits but introduced a new activity which will help to lose weight. The comfort zone was not disturbed, only expanded.
Go on, try it. List the limiting beliefs, establish your comfort zone and see how you can expand it.
