The other day my wife wanted to make fajitas and asked me to get some guacamole at the supermarket. No problem. I went to pick up the product we usually buy and paused. I decided to actually check what was in it. Well, the first thing I noticed was on the front of the bottle. It stated that this was a guacamole like sauce. Huh?! This means that what we usually had was not even considered guacamole. No way am I buying this now. I quickly glanced at the back to see what the ingredients were. The list was long, so I only focused on the bits I thought made sense. I picked up a few items and went home to make my own.
Here is what I came up with. It tasted great and was very simple to make.
handful of fresh coriander leaves
juice of 1/2 lime
20ml virgin olive oil
50ml double cream
Mix everything very well in a blender. You may need a powerful one to get the texture right. I have a Ninja blender with an add on to make shakes. A NutriBullet or the like would also do very well. Just make sure the avocado is ripe and ready to eat. If it is too hard the texture will not be correct and the taste will miss the mark. The lime juice adds a bit of flavour and most importantly, it keeps the avocado from turning brown.
Trust me, this homemade guacamole tastes great and you will never want to buy a ready made one again! And it is easy to make….
*What is guacamole? By now, you probably know but for those that don’t, guacamole is an avocado based dip or salad which originates from the Aztecs in what is now Mexico. Very popular in Central and South American cuisine. Goes well with many foods and is a very healthy and nutritious meal in itself.
